The Sailor Who Ruled Iceland for Two Months

A debt-ridden Danish merchant sailor declared himself ruler of Iceland in 1809, abolished four centuries of Danish law, and held power for exactly two months before a British warship arrested him, and Iceland was somehow better off for it.
